Albert M. Kircher saved Victor N. Almquist from drowning, Mankato, Minnesota, April 2, 1917. Almquist, 39, jumped from a bridge into the Minnesota River and drifted with the current. Kircher, 27, surveyor, although heavily clothed and warned against entering the cold water, swam 125 feet to Almquist, reaching him 100 feet from the bank, where the water was 15 feet deep. Almquist tried to get hold of Kircher, but Kircher got in back of him, grasped his collar, submerged him for a few seconds, and then swam 120 feet with him to the bank.
