Albert Fornaro, Jr., rescued Patrick Clifford from burning, Bronx, New York, May 5, 1972. Fire broke out in a fourth-floor apartment where Clifford, 73, lived alone. Fornaro, 30, sanitation man, and another man broke in the door of the apartment house and began warning tenants of the fire. Fornaro ran to the fourth floor and broke in the door of Clifford’s apartment, which was completely filled with dense smoke. Crawling into the apartment and guided by moans from Clifford, Fornaro found him lying on the floor in the burning kitchen. Fornaro dragged Clifford, who was badly burned, 10 feet to the apartment door but then lost consciousness and collapsed in the doorway. The other man pulled Fornaro and Clifford into the hall. Firemen arrived and put out the flames. Fornaro was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and recovered, but Clifford succumbed to his burns. 52779-5991
