Adam Liddle, 44, assistant rigger foreman, saved Earl Byers, 25, rigger, from suffocation, McKeesport, Pennsylvania, October 15, 1917. (See case of EARL BYERS.) When Byers had been overcome, Liddle, who had assumed charge outside the manhole, asked for volunteers to enter the flue, but no person volunteered. Liddle then entered, went to the valve, and tied a rope to Byers. He felt the effect of the gas, but he returned to a point under the manhole and was drawn out, having been in the flue about two minutes. He helped to pull Byers out and was not seriously affected. 18504-1363
