A. Daniel Phillips rescued Linda L. Hurley from exposure, Idanha, Oregon, February 19, 1981. Mrs. Hurley, 33, was stranded with her two small children atop an automobile partially submerged in the cold, fast- flowing North Santiam River. Two other men took the children to the bank. One of the men returned for Mrs. Hurley, but was unable to assist her due to the effects of the cold, rushing water. Phillips, 22, truck driver, waded to the automobile using a garden hose that had been tied to it and the bank. At the automobile, Phillips lifted Mrs. Hurley, then took her to the bank.
